Group of Finches, a chromolithograph from the natural history set Animate Creation, published in 1898 by Selmar Hess in New York. The plate title is lettered beneath the image, with the publisher's imprint in the lower margin of the picture.
Three finches are gathered around a thistle and a leafy branch in a meadow. A goldfinch with a red face and black and yellow wings swoops down at the top onto a purple thistle flower, a bullfinch with a rose-red breast perches on a branch at lower right, and a third, browner bird looks up from the left. In the distance a village church spire rises above the trees beneath a pale sky. The color is laid in the smooth, saturated tones of late-century chromolithography, with careful detail in the thistle leaves and the alder catkins.
The set was printed in America for the New York publisher, but the species shown, a goldfinch and bullfinch among them, are European birds.
