Partridge, a chromolithograph from the natural history set Animate Creation, published in 1898 by Selmar Hess in New York. The plate title is lettered "Partridge" beneath the image, with the publisher's imprint in the lower margin of the picture.
A covey of partridges shelters among tall grass and fallen leaves at the edge of a meadow. The adult stands upright at the center with a chestnut-barred flank, while the others crouch around it and one more is half hidden at the left. Behind them a rail fence post, hedgerows and soft trees recede into a hazy green landscape under a pale sky. The color is built up in the muted greens and browns that suit the subject, with fine detail in the grasses and the scattered leaves.
The plate is one of the set's scenes of European game birds, printed in the United States for the New York publisher.
