The woodcock, an original chromolithograph from the natural history set Animate Creation, published in New York by Selmar Hess in 1898. The sheet is printed in color from stone, with the plate title "Woodcock" below the image and the imprint "Selmar Hess, Publisher, N.Y." beneath the picture.

Two long-billed woodcocks stand in a damp woodland clearing. The nearer bird faces left with its bill angled down toward the ground, while the second probes the mud at the left among dead leaves and clumps of sedge. Slender beech trunks rise behind, their branches still carrying autumn foliage, and fallen red and yellow leaves lie on the forest floor. The browns, russets and greens are laid in soft, layered tones, and the plumage of the barred head and mottled back is carefully modeled.

The set is catalogued as the work of Louis Prang (1824 to 1909), a German-born printer in Boston and the leading American color lithographer of the century. The setting and plumage suggest the Old World woodcock.
