Mallard Duck, a chromolithograph from the natural history set Animate Creation, published in 1898 by Selmar Hess in New York. The plate title is lettered "Mallard Duck" beneath the image, with the publisher's imprint in the lower margin.

A drake stands on a mat of dry reeds at the water's edge, in full plumage with a glossy green head, a white collar, a chestnut breast and a gray body, a hen crouching beside him in the foreground. Tall reeds fill the background and a line of ducks flies across the pale sky above the marsh, with a few more swimming in the channel behind. The color is built up in the muted, naturalistic tones of late-century chromolithography.

The mallard breeds across the Northern Hemisphere, in North America as well as Europe and Asia. Louis Prang (1824 to 1909) was a leading American color printer, and his firm printed the plates of Animate Creation.
