Linden's Helmet-Crest Humming Bird, a chromolithograph from the natural history set Animate Creation, published in 1898 by Selmar Hess in New York and printed by L. Prang & Co. The plate title is lettered beneath the image, with the publisher's name in the lower margin of the picture.
Two dark, long-tailed birds perch on a thin twig in the foreground, the male at left with a tall white crest and a white tuft at the throat, the second bird at right with a plain dark plumage. Behind them a hazy range of snow-covered peaks rises from soft blue-green slopes, a setting that suits a mountain hummingbird. The color is built up in the rich, smooth tones typical of Prang's chromolithographic work.
Helmetcrests are hummingbirds of the high Andes. Louis Prang (1824 to 1909), the German-born Boston printer, was among the leading American color printers of his time, and the plate carries the Prang & Co. imprint.
