Weaver Birds, a chromolithograph from the natural history set Animate Creation, published in 1898 by Selmar Hess in New York and printed by L. Prang & Co. The plate title is lettered beneath the image, with the Prang & Co. credit and the publisher's name in the lower margin.
A crowd of weaver birds clusters on leafy branches against a distant, hazy plain. A long-tailed black and yellow bird with sweeping tail feathers perches at the center, three red and black birds crowd together in the foreground, another red bird sits at the left, and several smaller, streaked finch-like birds with pink bills perch above. The color is built up in vivid reds and yellows against soft greens, one of the most colorful plates in the set.
Louis Prang (1824 to 1909) was a German-born American printer, lithographer and publisher. His firm was known for the quality of its color printing.
