Two black-necked grebes, plate title "Podiceps californicus", an original large folio lithograph with hand color from Daniel Giraud Elliot's The New and Heretofore Unfigured Species of the Birds of North America. The work was published in New York for the author between 1866 and 1869, with the plates lithographed and colored by Bowen & Co. of Philadelphia.

The two grebes swim on open water in a landscape-format composition. Each has a dark head and neck, a fan of golden and rose feathers behind the eye, and a pale underside shading to purplish flanks. Broad lily pads float around them, with two cream-colored water lilies in bloom at the center, and tall reeds rise along the far bank beneath a soft yellow horizon. The lettering at the lower left reads "Drawn from Nature by D.G. Elliot, F.Z.S.", and the Bowen & Co. imprint is at the lower right.

Elliot's folio was devoted to North American birds not previously illustrated by Wilson or Audubon, with a strong emphasis on species of the American West such as this Californian grebe.
