Two gilded flickers (Colaptes chrysoides) clinging to a weathered tree trunk, an original large folio lithograph with hand color from Daniel Giraud Elliot's The New and Heretofore Unfigured Species of the Birds of North America, published in New York for the author between 1866 and 1869. The plate title reads "Colaptes Chrysoides" (spelled "Chrysoldes" in some listings), and the lithography and coloring are by Bowen & Co. of Philadelphia.
One woodpecker grips the trunk at the right with its tail braced against the bark, showing its spotted underparts, barred back, black breast crescent and gray head. The second peers around the trunk from the left. Sprigs of leaves and soft green undergrowth sit at the base of the tree against a plain toned ground. The lettering at the lower left reads "Drawn from Nature by D.G. Elliot, F.Z.S.", and the Bowen & Co. imprint is at the lower right.
The gilded flicker is a woodpecker of the southwestern deserts, and Elliot's folio gave special attention to birds of the American West that the earlier work of Wilson and Audubon had not figured.
