Hibiscus coccineus, the scarlet rosemallow, a color chromolithograph from Thomas Meehan's The Native Flowers and Ferns of the United States, published by L. Prang and Company of Boston in 1879, with the plate lettering "Vol. II" and "Plate I" at the top and the Latin name at the foot.

A single large flower fills the sheet, seen from the front, with five deep red petals streaked with pink and darker at the center, a pale yellow-tipped column of stamens and a green calyx. The stem curves down along the right edge. Two small studies in line are drawn below in pale gray: a flower bud with its leafy bracts at the lower left, and a deeply lobed leaf outlined at the center, so the plate shows the plant's flower, bud and foliage.

Prang was the Boston firm that was best known for color printing in America. The scarlet rosemallow is a native wetland hibiscus of the southeastern United States, and the plate belongs to the second volume of Meehan's survey of American wildflowers and ferns.
