Maryland senna, a North American wild flower, in a color lithograph titled "Cassia Marylandica" (Senna marilandica), from the Dutch work Nederlandsche flora en pomona, published in 1879 and lithographed by G. Severeyns after drawings by A.J. Wendel. The printer's credit "Groningen, J.B. Wolters" appears at the foot of the sheet.
The plate shows a flowering stem rising from the base with long pinnate leaves of many narrow leaflets, and clusters of bright yellow flowers with darker brown anthers at the top and along the stem. Two detached flowers are drawn separately at the lower left and right corners, showing the five spreading petals and the central stamens in detail. The whole plant is set on a tinted ground without any background.
Senna marilandica is also called Maryland wild senna, a perennial native to the eastern United States, and its leaflets were used in traditional medicine as a laxative. The plate is a good example of the late nineteenth century Dutch botanical lithograph.
