American Anecdote: Wolves and Boy, an original hand-colored aquatint from Foreign Field Sports, published in London by Edward Orme in 1813. The plate is lettered "American Anecdote Wolves & Boy" below the image, with "Howitt del." and "Dubourg sculp." at the lower corners.
A boy runs along a sunlit forest path in the middle distance, glancing back over his shoulder. Wolves are closing on him from behind the trees: one crouches low by the roots of a large, twisted trunk at the center, and three more press forward through the undergrowth at the lower right. A dark spruce stands at the left, birch-like trees with yellow-green foliage fill the background, and the wolves are colored in warm browns and grays with a grassy ground beneath.
The sheet belongs to the series Foreign Field Sports, which collected hunting scenes and anecdotes from different countries; this is the plate set in North America. The aquatint ground and the fine hand coloring give the forest its depth.
