Antique Date Palm & Coconut Botanical Scene, Phoenix & Cocos, c.1831
Description:
This richly illustrated botanical scene depicts the date palm (Phoenix dactylifera) and coconut palm (Cocos nucifera) within a tropical landscape, including human figures harvesting fruit. Unlike purely analytical plates, this composition combines botany with ethnographic context.
Issued in Zenker’s Merkantilische Waarenkunde, the plate reflects European fascination with tropical agriculture and colonial production systems.
Original hand coloring is lively and atmospheric, making this one of the most decorative plates in the entire series.
Condition report:
Moderate toning and minor spotting. Colors remain strong.
Framing tips:
A wide ivory mat and dark wood frame emphasize the scenic quality.
Technique: Copper engraving with original hand coloring
Maker: Jonathan Carl Zenker, Germany, 1831–1832
