Three owls of North America, a set of three original color lithographs from The Hawks and Owls of the United States by C. Hart Merriam and A. K. Fisher, illustrated by John L. Ridgway and dated 1893. Each plate is lettered at the head "Bull. No. 3. Div. Ornithology", and the first carries the plate number 26.
The three sheets show the Dwarf Screech Owl, the Burrowing Owl and the Great Horned Owl, each titled in capitals beneath the image with the scientific name in italics below. The Dwarf Screech Owl perches upright on a bough of pine needles, its plumage finely streaked and barred in grays and browns. The Burrowing Owl stands on a sandy mound beside a hole in the ground, in the open dry country the species favors, drawn in tawny browns with a long-legged stance. The Great Horned Owl, with its tufted ears and yellow eyes, sits on a mossy log with a plump brown prey animal gripped beneath it.
The plates were made to illustrate the habits and diet of North American birds of prey, and Ridgway's soft, natural coloring gives each bird a quiet setting rather than a bare background.
