This original antique collage brings together two botanical prints from Walter Müller's 1904 publication, which meticulously cataloged orchid species in Germany and the surrounding areas.
The first illustration features "Orchis tephrosanthos Vill.", which displays a lush inflorescence of pink and mauve flowers, each detailed with a characteristic orchid shape and delicate patterning.
The second print illustrates "Orchis militaris (L. z. T.) Huds.", with its strikingly arrayed flowers in shades of pink and lilac, resembling a troop in 'military' formation.
Both illustrations are complete with anatomical dissections of the flowers and detailed renderings of the plants' root systems, showcasing the intricate relationships between form and function in these species. The illustrations are a testament to Müller's dedication to botanical sciences and his artistic prowess, capturing the transient beauty of orchids for posterity.
