Title: Hand-Colored Botanical Engravings of Red and Black Currant Varieties, 1902

Description:

This exquisite trio of hand-colored botanical engravings from 1902 showcases three refined studies of currant species from the Ribes family: Ribes rubrum var. Smithianum (Red Currant, var. y), Ribes rubrum var. spicatum (Red Currant, var. a), and Ribes nigrum (Black Currant). Together they form a vibrant and balanced depiction of some of Britain’s most cherished berry-bearing plants, combining botanical precision with the natural beauty of cultivated fruit.

The first plate, Red Currant var. Smithianum, is delicately drawn with flowering clusters and both colored and outlined berries, revealing the artistic interplay between illustration and scientific study. The second plate, Red Currant var. Spicatum, presents a fuller, fruit-laden spray with lush green foliage and radiant red berries that highlight the visual richness of this variety. The final composition, Black Currant, stands in contrast with its deep violet fruits, smaller leaves, and aromatic character, known for both culinary and medicinal uses.

Each engraving demonstrates fine line etching and subtle hand coloring, enhancing the natural hues and textures of the berries, leaves, and stems. The composition of each plate includes small floral and fruit dissections, underscoring the educational purpose of these early natural history studies. Printed on softly toned paper, these engravings exemplify the elegant craftsmanship of turn-of-the-century botanical illustration.

Condition report: Excellent for age. Minor toning and faint specks in the margins consistent with antique paper. Strong, clean impressions with clearly visible plate marks and ample borders.

Framing tips: When framed together, these three prints create a lively and harmonious display of color, from warm reds to deep purples. Best presented in natural oak, walnut, or gilt frames with ivory mounts, they lend classic botanical charm to kitchens, dining rooms, or conservatories. Their balanced forms and rich colors make them perfect for a refined yet inviting interior.

Technique: Hand-colored engraving
