The Greenland whale, an original chromolithograph from The Royal Natural History, published in London in 1894. The plate is printed in full color, with the title "The Greenland Whale" lettered in the margin below the image.

The scene is a heavy swell under a pale, hazy sky, with the great dark whale rolling at the surface and its tail flukes lifted above the waves behind. Its enormous head and mouth are shown at the front, and a pale spout rises beside it. Black-and-white killer whales surge through the foam around its head, and the sea is a mass of green and white breaking water. The plate is a vivid, dramatic scene, rather than a quiet portrait of the animal.

The Greenland whale (the bowhead) is a large baleen whale of Arctic waters, and the plate belongs to a Victorian multi-part natural history of the animal kingdom, illustrated with color plates of mammals, birds and other creatures.
