English Moths on Hazel Branch with Nuts, Antique Insect Engraving, Eleazar Albin 1720

Published in London in 1720, this original hand-colored copper engraving forms part of Eleazar Albin’s influential work A Natural History of English Insects, one of the earliest and most important publications devoted to British entomology. The plate illustrates moths, caterpillars, and pupae arranged around branches of hazel, showing the relationship between insect life cycles and their host plant.

The upper composition features a hazel branch with broad serrated leaves and developing nuts, accompanied by caterpillars feeding on the foliage and winged moths shown in different poses. Below, a second branch presents another stage of larval development, together forming a clear visual narrative of metamorphosis. This structured yet decorative arrangement is characteristic of Albin’s work, combining scientific observation with balanced, ornamental design.

The plate is dedicated “To Mrs Elizabeth Herbert,” reflecting the network of subscribers and patrons who supported natural history publishing in early 18th-century England. Such dedications provide valuable insight into the social context of Georgian scientific culture and add historical interest to the sheet.

The engraving retains its original hand coloring, with soft greens in the foliage, warm brown tones in the hazelnuts, and delicately tinted insects. Fine engraved linework remains clearly visible throughout, giving the plate both documentary importance and strong decorative appeal. Albin’s engravings are highly sought after by collectors of early natural history, entomology, and botanical illustration, as well as by interior designers seeking authentic 18th-century wall art.
