Antique Entomology Prints, English Insects on Oak, Bramble & Willow, Albin 1720

Description:

A beautifully balanced group of three early 18th-century hand-colored engravings by Eleazar Albin, published in London in 1720 as part of his influential work A Natural History of English Insects. These plates represent some of the earliest systematic studies of British insect life, combining botanical observation with the detailed depiction of metamorphosis.

The compositions present caterpillars, chrysalides, and adult moths in direct relationship with their host plants. The foliage includes recognisable English species such as oak (Quercus), bramble or blackberry (Rubus), and willow (Salix), each rendered with careful botanical accuracy. The insects, likely early representations of tiger moths, noctuid moths, and geometrids, are shown at different stages of development, offering a clear and instructive visual narrative of transformation.

The layout of each plate is characteristically refined, with elements spaced elegantly across the sheet, creating a harmonious balance between scientific illustration and decorative design. The soft hand coloring, with natural greens and muted earth tones, enhances both clarity and visual appeal, making these prints equally suitable for collectors and interior display.

Each plate bears a dedication to a contemporary figure, reflecting the patronage system that supported natural history publishing in Georgian England. Among those honored are William Le Grand of Maiden Early in Berkshire, Brigadier John Langston, and Montague Gerrard Drake, Esq., individuals connected to the social and intellectual networks of the time.

Albin’s work remains highly regarded for its clarity, charm, and historical importance, representing one of the earliest comprehensive attempts to document British insects in their natural habitats.

This is an original set of 18th-century engravings, not reproductions. All items are authentic period works over 100 years old. The prints are sold unframed; any framed images are shown for presentation and inspiration only.
