English Moths on Hawthorn, Antique Insect Print by Eleazar Albin, 1720

Published in London in 1720, this original hand-colored copper engraving forms part of Eleazar Albin’s influential work A Natural History of English Insects, one of the earliest comprehensive studies of British entomology. The plate illustrates moths, caterpillars, and pupae arranged around hawthorn branches, presenting the insect life cycle in direct relation to its host plant.

The composition shows two stages of larval development on hawthorn foliage, accompanied by winged moths depicted in different poses, a format characteristic of Albin’s approach combining scientific observation with decorative clarity. The careful arrangement allows the viewer to understand metamorphosis while also appreciating the aesthetic balance of the plate. Hawthorn (*Crataegus*), a key hedgerow species in the English landscape, is rendered with softly modeled leaves in restrained green tones.

This plate is dedicated “To Mrs Howland,” reflecting the network of subscribers and private patrons who supported the publication of natural history works in early 18th-century England. Such dedications were customary and provide valuable insight into the social context of scientific publishing during the Georgian period.

The engraving retains its original hand coloring, applied at the time of publication. The palette is subtle and harmonious, with fine engraved linework visible throughout, giving the sheet both documentary importance and strong decorative appeal. Works by Albin are sought after by collectors of early natural history, entomology, and botanical illustration, as well as by interior designers looking for authentic 18th-century wall art.

Framing tips

Dark walnut or ebonized frames with an ivory or warm off-white mat emphasize the engraving’s antique character. For contemporary interiors, light oak or natural wood with museum-white matting works well. UV-protective glazing is recommended. Sold unframed.
