Title: Antique Scandinavian Bird Lithograph, Eurasian Bittern, Svenska Fåglar, 1929

Description:

This elegant Scandinavian ornithological lithograph depicts the Eurasian Bittern (Botaurus stellaris), a secretive wetland bird known for its remarkable camouflage and distinctive booming call. The print originates from the refined Swedish natural history series Svenska Fåglar Efter Naturen Och På Sten Ritade (“Swedish Birds Drawn from Nature and Rendered on Stone”), published in Sweden in 1929 by A. Börtzells. The series represents an important example of early 20th-century Nordic natural history illustration, where scientific accuracy is combined with a calm and decorative visual style characteristic of Scandinavian design.

The composition portrays the Bittern standing alert among marsh grasses, its body held upright with the head tilted upward, a posture typical of the species when blending into reeds. This behavior, often called the “bittern pose,” allowed the bird to remain nearly invisible in wetland habitats. The artist carefully captures the intricate pattern of brown, buff, and black streaking in the plumage, demonstrating close observation of the species’ natural camouflage.

Lithography was particularly well suited to this type of natural history illustration, allowing the artist to render fine tonal variations and subtle feather textures. The restrained palette and balanced composition reflect the aesthetic traditions of Scandinavian scientific illustration, where clarity, precision, and quiet elegance were highly valued.

The plate bears the scientific name Botaurus stellaris Lin. together with the Swedish name Rördrom, reinforcing the educational purpose of the publication. Prints from this series were intended both for scientific reference and for cultured households interested in the study of Nordic wildlife.

Today, these prints are sought after by collectors of ornithological art and by interior designers who appreciate their understated beauty. The calm color palette and generous margins make them particularly suitable for modern Scandinavian interiors, classic libraries, or nature-inspired decorative schemes.

This is an original 1929 lithograph printed in color during the lithographic process and not a later reproduction.

Condition:

Good condition considering age. Light overall age toning to the paper with minor spotting in the margins. The printed image remains clean and well preserved.

Framing tips:

This print frames beautifully with a generous museum-style ivory mat and a simple walnut, oak, or light Scandinavian-style frame. Such framing emphasizes the refined natural tones of the illustration and creates an elegant decorative presence suitable for both modern and traditional interiors.
