A view of the camp on Juan Fernandez island where the commodore's tent was pitched during George Anson's voyage around the world, an original copper engraving from the Dutch edition of Anson's Reize rondsom de Werreld, published in 1749. The plate carries the Dutch caption "Gezigt van de Plaats op 't Eiland Juan Fernandes daar de Tent van den Kommandeur stont" and a French version below.
In the foreground two large trees frame the scene, and a gentleman in a tricorn hat with a staff walks a dog toward the viewer. In the middle distance a few small figures stand and converse near the white tents, in a clearing ringed by a curved line of trees. Sharp, jagged mountain peaks rise behind, with sparse hatching and clouds across the sky.
Anson's squadron reached the island in 1741 to recover from scurvy and rest the crews, and this plate records the encampment. The plate carries a number in the upper right corner.
