A dog from Baffin Bay and the sled it pulls, an original antique engraving with hand color from Friedrich Johann Bertuch's Bilderbuch fur Kinder, published in Weimar around 1800. The plate is headed "Saugethiere XCVII" and "Quadrupedes XCVII" and carries three numbered figures.

Figure 1, at the bottom, is a large dark-coated dog with a thick ruff and pricked ears, standing on a blue ground. Figure 2 shows the sled in detail: a long low platform of lashed wooden slats on broad runners, with a curved upright at the front and a cloth hanging from it. Figure 3, at the upper right, shows the same sled in use, drawn small with a team of dogs pulling it across a snowy plain. The lettering names the animals as coming from Baffin Bay, the arm of the Arctic and North Atlantic between Baffin Island and the west coast of Greenland.

The plate belongs to the natural history sections of the Bilderbuch, which Bertuch (1747 to 1822), a German publisher, issued as a children's encyclopedia in many volumes from 1790 to 1830, illustrated with about 1,200 engraved plates on animals, plants, costume and many other subjects.
