Jaguar and cougar, an original hand-colored lithograph by Karl Joseph Brodtmann, dated 1816. The sheet is numbered "No 27" at the upper right and is lettered along the bottom in German with the common and scientific names: "Der Jaguar. Felis Onca. Der Cuguar. Felis Concolor."

The jaguar crouches on a mossy rock at the upper left, its rosette-spotted coat colored in yellow and brown, holding a small animal in its jaws. Below it the cougar, in plain tawny brown with a pale chest, is stretched low along the foreground with its forepaws extended. A rocky outcrop, a slender tree and small flowering plants fill the setting behind and around them.

Brodtmann, a Swiss-born lithographer, was one of the earliest to apply the new process of lithography to natural history, and his animal plates from these years are early examples of lithographed zoological illustration. Both cats pictured here are native to the Americas, the jaguar ranging from Mexico into South America and the cougar across much of both continents.
