Indian Rhinoceros (Rhinoceros unicornis), Brodtmann Natural History Print, 1816

This original hand-colored lithograph depicts the Indian rhinoceros (Rhinoceros unicornis), one of the most distinctive and powerful mammals of Asia. Shown in profile, the animal's remarkable armor-like skin folds are rendered with exceptional detail, emphasizing the prehistoric appearance that has fascinated naturalists, explorers, and collectors for centuries. The German title beneath the image, Das einhörnige Nashorn ("The One-Horned Rhinoceros"), is accompanied by the scientific name *Rhinoceros unicornis*.

The print was created by Swiss artist and natural history illustrator Karl Joseph Brodtmann (1787–1862) and published in Lindau in 1816 as part of the celebrated *Naturhistorische Bilder-Gallerie aus dem Thierreiche*. Produced during the pioneering years of lithographic printing, the work sought to introduce the wonders of the animal kingdom to a broad audience through accurate and visually appealing illustrations.

Brodtmann was among the leading lithographic artists of the early nineteenth century. His natural history plates are admired for their combination of scientific accuracy, elegant draftsmanship, and delicate hand coloring. In this image, the rhinoceros is presented without distracting background elements, allowing the viewer to appreciate its extraordinary anatomy, including the heavy folds of skin that resemble medieval armor and the prominent single horn that distinguishes the species.

Native to the grasslands and river valleys of the Indian subcontinent, the Indian rhinoceros has long been regarded as one of the world's most impressive large mammals. During the nineteenth century, depictions of rhinoceroses were highly sought after by European audiences fascinated by exotic wildlife encountered through exploration and scientific discovery.

The simplicity of the composition gives the print a timeless decorative quality while retaining its value as a historical zoological study. The subject appeals equally to collectors of natural history, wildlife art, Asian fauna, safari imagery, and early scientific illustration.

Today, original Brodtmann lithographs remain highly desirable for their artistic quality and historical significance. This rhinoceros plate is particularly attractive due to its strong visual impact, clean composition, and iconic subject matter.
