Antique Botanical Lithograph, Vanilla Guianensis, Suriname Orchid 1856

Description:

A rare and elegant mid-19th century botanical chromolithograph depicting Vanilla guianensis, the vanilla orchid native to Suriname. This refined plate originates from the Dutch horticultural publication Tuinbouw-Flora van Nederland en zijne overzeesche bezittingen, published in 1856 under the direction of botanist Willem Hendrik de Vriese.

The composition presents the climbing orchid with graceful, curving stems and broad, fleshy leaves rendered in deep green tones. Two delicate white blossoms emerge from the vine, their soft, translucent petals carefully shaded to convey both texture and fragility. Above, a cluster of unopened buds suggests the plant’s ongoing growth cycle. The overall composition is both scientifically accurate and aesthetically balanced, capturing the exotic nature of this economically and botanically significant species.

Vanilla orchids were of great importance in the 19th century due to their connection to the production of vanilla, a highly prized commodity. This illustration reflects the Dutch interest in documenting and cultivating valuable plant species from their overseas territories, particularly in Suriname.

Lithographed after the design by Q.M.R. Ver Huell and printed in the Netherlands, this work exemplifies the fine quality of botanical chromolithography of the period. Its restrained palette and elegant composition make it a particularly sophisticated example within the series.

This print is highly suitable for collectors of botanical art, orchid enthusiasts, and those interested in colonial plant history. Its subtle color scheme and flowing lines make it ideal for refined interiors, whether displayed individually or as part of a curated botanical grouping.

Condition report:

Fair to good condition with light age toning and scattered spotting. Original fold line visible, as issued. Margins intact. Image remains clear with well-preserved detail.

Framing tips:

Pairs beautifully with a dark wood frame such as walnut or ebonized finish, combined with a wide ivory mat to enhance contrast. For a lighter presentation, a slim black frame with a clean white mat provides a modern and elegant look.

Special note:

This is an original antique engraving, not a reproduction. All items we offer are authentic period works of art over 100 years old. The print is sold unframed; any framed images are shown for presentation and interior inspiration only and may not always be on scale with the original.
