Antique Botanical Engraving of Pokeweed (Phytolacca) - 1803 Floral Print by Samuel Curtis

Description:

This engraving is from "The Botanical Magazine," published by Samuel Curtis on December 31, 1803.

Plate 70 features detailed illustrations of the Pokeweed plant (*Phytolacca* species). Fig. 1 shows the plant's flowering stem with elongated leaves and small white flowers, while Fig. 2 depicts the distinctive fruit of the plant. The illustrations were drawn by Sydenham Edwards and engraved by F. Sansom, both of whom are renowned for their detailed and accurate botanical illustrations.

About the Artist:

Sydenham Edwards, a distinguished botanical artist, contributed extensively to "The Botanical Magazine" with his meticulous and lifelike plant illustrations. Edwards's work is noted for its precision and beauty, qualities that were expertly translated into engravings by F. Sansom. Together, their work under the publication of Samuel Curtis helped "The Botanical Magazine" become a critical resource for botanists and plant enthusiasts alike.

Description of the Engraving:

The engraving provides a comprehensive view of the Pokeweed plant, capturing both its flowering stage and fruit. The delicate white flowers and lush green leaves are highlighted with precise hand-coloring, emphasizing the natural beauty of the plant.

The detailed depiction of the fruit in Fig. 2 offers insight into the plant's unique reproductive features. This plate serves as both an artistic representation and a scientific record of the plant, demonstrating the intersection of art and science in early botanical works.

The engraving is in very good condition, showing minor signs of aging such as slight foxing and minimal edge wear. The hand-colored illustrations retain their vibrancy, ensuring the botanical details are clear and visually striking, with well-preserved paper quality.
