Canadian Woodpecker, a hand-colored lithograph from the first royal octavo edition of The Birds of America, drawn by John James Audubon and printed and colored by J.T. Bowen of Philadelphia. The plate is numbered 52 and lettered Pl. 258 at the top, with the title and "Male" beneath the picture.

A single bird clings head down to a lichen-covered limb of a leafless tree, in black and white plumage with a striped head, in a sparse, uncluttered composition. The tree, drawn in soft brown and gray, takes up most of the sheet. Audubon's drawing credit and Bowen's imprint are lettered along the lower margin.

The royal octavo edition, issued in New York and Philadelphia from 1840 to 1844, was a smaller and cheaper version of the great folio, drawn from the original plates, and was followed by seven further editions.
