Canada Bunting (Tree Sparrow), a hand-colored lithograph from the first royal octavo edition of The Birds of America, drawn by John James Audubon and printed and colored by J.T. Bowen of Philadelphia. The plate is numbered 34 and lettered Pl. 166 at the top, with the common names, "1 Male 2 Female", and a second legend, "Canadian Barberry", beneath the picture.
Two birds are shown perched in a branch of the shrub, the male above with wings and tail spread and the female below, both in the streaked rusty-brown plumage of the species, with olive-green leaves and small berries on the twigs. The plate carries Audubon's drawing credit and Bowen's imprint in the lower margin.
Audubon began planning a smaller edition of the work even as the last plates of the great double elephant folio were being finished. The royal octavo edition, issued in New York and Philadelphia from 1840 to 1844, was a success and was followed by seven further editions.
