Two cardinals perched among grasses, a color lithograph lettered "Cardinalis igneus", from Daniel Giraud Elliot's "The New and Heretofore Unfigured Species of the Birds of North America", published between 1866 and 1869. The sheet is lettered as drawn from nature by Elliot and printed by Bowen & Co. of Philadelphia.

The two red birds have pointed crests and short, stout bills. One perches on a gnarled branch above a spray of blue flowers, and the other is lower on the plate among blades of grass. The group is placed on a plain ground, with no background scene, so the plumage and the branch carry the composition. The sheet is a tall format of about 70 by 62.5 cm.

The work appeared between 1866 and 1869 and set out to figure North American species not previously illustrated. Only 200 copies were printed, and the lithography was by Bowen & Co. of Philadelphia.
