Gilded flickers, a color lithograph lettered "Colaptes chrysoides", from Daniel Giraud Elliot's "The New and Heretofore Unfigured Species of the Birds of North America", published between 1866 and 1869. The sheet is lettered as drawn from nature by Elliot and printed by Bowen & Co. of Philadelphia.

Two woodpeckers cling to a broken tree trunk. The one on the right climbs the bark with its black-spotted white underparts and barred brown back in view, while the other looks out from behind the trunk at the left. Moss grows on the bark, a leafy sprig rises at lower left and a few evergreens appear in the distance. The sheet is a tall format of about 70 by 62.5 cm.

The work appeared between 1866 and 1869 and set out to figure North American species not previously illustrated. Only 200 copies were printed, and the lithography was by Bowen & Co. of Philadelphia.
