The yellow-nosed albatross, a color lithograph lettered "Diomedea chlororhyncha", from Daniel Giraud Elliot's "The New and Heretofore Unfigured Species of the Birds of North America", published between 1866 and 1869. The lettering gives Elliot as the artist, drawn from nature, and Bowen & Co. of Philadelphia as printers. The sheet measures about 46 by 59 cm.
The bird sits on the water in profile, facing left, with a white head and breast, dark slate wings and back, and a long pale yellow bill with a hooked tip. The sea behind it is drawn in blue-green swells with white caps, and a few sea birds fly in the distance under a band of pale yellow light at the horizon.
The work appeared between 1866 and 1869 and set out to figure North American species not previously illustrated. Only 200 copies were printed, and the lithography was by Bowen & Co. of Philadelphia.
