A saddle-billed stork and a flamingo standing in a marsh, an original engraving from Histoire naturelle des oiseaux by Emm. Le Maout, published in 1853. The plate is printed in black on a toned ground, with the French captions "Jabiru de Sénégal" and "Flammant rouge" lettered beneath the image, one under each bird.
The stork stands at the left with its long red-banded bill pointed to the right, its black head and neck, black and white body and long legs drawn in detail. The flamingo at the right bends its long neck around in a loop, with its head lowered to the water at the lower left, where water lilies float in the foreground. Behind both birds are the fronds of a large palm or cycad, and reeds and low marsh plants fill the edges of the scene.
Jean-Emmanuel-Marie Le Maout (1799 to 1877) was a French naturalist, and his illustrated natural history of birds was published in Paris.
