Datura sanguinea and hybrid petunias, a pair of original color-printed lithographs from Favourite Flowers of Garden and Greenhouse, 1897, each on its own sheet with the plant name and "Nat. size" lettered below the image.
The left plate shows Datura sanguinea as a single large trumpet of orange and yellow with frilled, pointed lobes, held above big, softly veined green leaves. The right plate shows hybrid petunias in three forms: a ruffled magenta flower at the upper right, a large flower in white with violet veining on the left, and small pink flowers at the lower left with a cutaway flower beside them, all set among rounded, hairy leaves.
Datura sanguinea comes from the Andes of South America, and the garden petunia was bred from South American species in the nineteenth century, so both subjects are plants of the Americas that European growers had taken up for the garden and the greenhouse.
