Marvel of Peru and Eastern Knotweed, a pair of original color-printed lithographs from Favourite Flowers of Garden and Greenhouse, 1897. Each plate is on its own sheet, lettered below the image with the plant name, its Latin name and "Nat. size."
The left plate shows the marvel of Peru, Mirabilis jalapa, in a bushy stem of broad pointed leaves with trumpet flowers of rose pink, yellow and white, a bud and a dark seed at the right, and the roots drawn at the lower right. The right plate shows Polygonum orientale, the eastern knotweed or prince's feather, in tall, drooping spikes of rose-pink flowers above very large, lance-shaped green leaves, with enlarged flowers and a section of the stem at the upper corners.
The marvel of Peru, a tropical American plant, was grown in European gardens from the sixteenth century, and its flowers open in the late afternoon, which gave it the name four o'clock flower. The knotweed is a plant of Asia and a favorite of the cottage garden.
