Le Tyran pipiri, an original hand-colored engraving from Louis Jean Pierre Vieillot's Histoire naturelle des oiseaux de l'Amérique septentrionale, published about 1807. The title line reads "Le Tyran pipiri. Tyrannus pipiri." with the plate number, and the credits below read "Prêtre pinx.", "Langlois imp." and "Bouquet sculp.", naming the painter, the printer and the engraver.
The bird perches in profile on the upper end of a lichen-covered branch, facing right. Its head is dark with a small red patch at the crown, the back and wings are blackish brown with pale feather edges, the underparts are pale buff-white, and the long tail is dark with a white tip. The bill is dark and pointed. The plate is printed in color and finished by hand, with a large clear space of cream paper around the bird.
Tyrants are the New World flycatchers, and Vieillot's work was notable for drawing such birds in life-like attitudes rather than as skins.
