Title: Three Gull Species, Hand-Colored Buffon Bird Engraving, Original 18th Century

Description:

An original eighteenth-century hand-colored engraving depicting three species of gulls, published as Plate 4 in Volume XVI of the celebrated natural history works associated with the French naturalist Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon. The plate illustrates three seabirds identified in French as "Le Goëland à manteau noir," "Le Goëland à manteau gris," and "La grande Mouette cendrée."

The composition presents the birds in a clear and elegant scientific format typical of Enlightenment-era natural history publications. Each specimen is carefully rendered in profile, allowing the viewer to study differences in plumage, coloration, proportions, and anatomy. The engraver combines scientific accuracy with decorative appeal, creating an image that functions both as a zoological illustration and as an attractive work of art.

During the eighteenth century, Buffon's monumental natural history publications transformed the study of animals and the natural world. His books were among the most influential scientific works of the period and were richly illustrated with engraved plates intended to educate and inspire readers throughout Europe. Bird engravings from these volumes remain highly sought after today for their combination of scientific importance, artistic quality, and decorative charm.

The subtle original hand coloring highlights the plumage and distinguishing features of the gulls while preserving the delicate engraved linework. The clean composition, attractive typography, and balanced arrangement of the birds make this a particularly appealing example of early ornithological illustration.

Today, original Buffon bird engravings are collected by enthusiasts of ornithology, natural history, maritime subjects, French engraving, and eighteenth-century decorative prints. The subject matter is especially appealing to coastal collectors and those interested in seabirds and marine environments.

This is an original eighteenth-century hand-colored engraving, not a later reproduction. Sold unframed.
