Solanum texanum, a chromolithograph from Louis van Houtte's Flore des Serres et des Jardins de l'Europe, issued in Ghent in the nineteenth century. The sheet is lettered "Solanum texanum Dun." with the origin "Texas" and the cultivation note "Plein air" (open ground).
A branching stem carries large, rounded leaves with lobed edges, and among them hang a cluster of ribbed, flattened fruits that look like small pumpkins: some are bright orange-red, some still green and yellow-green, and one is shown from below with its dark center. At the top a single white, star-shaped flower opens against the leaves. The plate is printed against the blank paper with strong, glossy color.
The label records that the plant is native to Texas and could be grown outdoors in Europe, one of the species Van Houtte's series presented to gardeners as ornamentals.
