Temminck's auk, adult and young (Brachyramphus Temminckii), an original large folio lithograph from Daniel Giraud Elliot's The New and Heretofore Unfigured Species of the Birds of North America, published in New York for the author between 1866 and 1869, with hand coloring. The plate is lettered "Brachyramphus Temminckii, adult and young", with "Drawn from Nature by D.G. Elliot, F.Z.S." at the lower left and the imprint "Bowen & Co. Lith. Phila." at the lower right.
Two seabirds stand on a rocky headland above a calm sea. The adult at the right, upright with a pale crest swept back from the head, has a white breast and gray-brown back, while the smaller young bird at the left is paler about the face. A band of warm sunrise color lies along the horizon, and small groups of birds are scattered on the rocks and in the air in the distance.
Elliot intended the work to supply life-size figures of species discovered since the time of Wilson and Audubon, with an emphasis on birds of the American West and the northern Pacific coast. The lithographs were printed in Philadelphia by Bowen and colored by hand.
