Antique Print of the Arctic Fox in Summer Coat, Gaimard, 1842

This finely hand-colored lithograph depicts the Arctic Fox (Vulpes lagopus, here Renard Isatis) in its darker summer coat. Two foxes are shown on a rocky tundra landscape, their fur rendered in rich shades of brown and black. This seasonal transformation, from a thick white winter coat to a darker summer pelage, allows the species to remain camouflaged year-round in its harsh Arctic environment.

The plate was published in Voyage en Islande et au Groenland (Paris, 1842), Paul Gaimard’s richly illustrated account of his 1835 scientific expedition. Originally intended to search for Jean de Blosseville’s lost Arctic expedition, the voyage instead produced a monumental survey of Iceland and Greenland’s natural history, landscapes, and people. The zoological section featured mammals, birds, fish, and shells, all executed with both scientific accuracy and artistic finesse.

This illustration was drawn by P. Ch. Toussaint and lithographed by J. Bernard, with delicate hand coloring that highlights the contrast between the fox’s sleek dark coat and the muted tones of its habitat. The lively poses of the animals, alert, watchful, and inquisitive, convey both scientific observation and a sense of natural vitality.

The Arctic Fox is one of the most iconic animals of the far north, renowned for its resilience and adaptability. Together with its winter counterpart, this plate provides a complete visual record of the species’ seasonal variations, making it a valuable piece for collectors of zoology and Arctic exploration prints.

Condition report: Strong impression with original hand coloring. Wide margins with noticeable foxing and light toning, mainly in outer areas, not intruding on the image. Plate mark clearly visible.

Framing tips: This plate pairs beautifully with the Arctic Fox in winter coat. They can be framed as a set in matching walnut or black frames with ivory mats, creating a striking seasonal contrast. A single mat with a pale grey or blue inner border would further enhance the natural history theme.
