Prepusa hookeriana Gardn., a color lithograph of a Brazilian plant, issued as a plate in a Ghent horticultural work and credited to van Houtte. The plant name and authority are lettered beneath the image, with "Bresil" at the left and "Serre chaude" (hothouse) at the right, and a small plate number appears at the lower right.
The plant is drawn as a low tuft of narrow, pointed green leaves from which rise several slender red stems, each carrying a drooping, ribbed crimson flower bud that opens at the tip into a small white star. Sketches of floral detail, a stamen and a pistil, appear at the right, and the lithographer's credit is lettered in tiny type at the left edge of the image.
Prepusa hookeriana belongs to the gentian family and is native to Brazil. The Latin name honors the botanist Hooker. The label "Serre chaude" shows that European growers treated it as a hothouse plant, and the print records a plant introduced from the Brazilian highlands.
