Heart of Jesus Caladium, Original Antique Botanical Print by van Nooten, c.1880

Description:

A striking original antique botanical chromolithograph depicting Caladium bicolor Vent., the ornamental Heart of Jesus or Fancy-Leaf Caladium. The plate was painted from nature by Berthe Hoola van Nooten and published in the third edition of Fleurs, Fruits et Feuillages Choisis de la Flore et de la Pomone de l'Ile de Java, issued by G. Severeyns in Brussels around 1880.

This elegant composition illustrates three richly colored caladium leaves with their dramatic crimson centers and deep green margins, accompanied by detailed botanical studies of the flower. The bold foliage creates one of the most decorative and contemporary-looking plates from Hoola van Nooten's celebrated series, making it equally appealing to collectors of botanical art and modern interior designers.

Caladium bicolor is native to tropical South America but has long been cultivated throughout Indonesia and Java, where it flourishes in warm, humid gardens. Its spectacular foliage has made it one of the world's most beloved ornamental tropical plants, prized for its vivid color patterns and architectural leaf forms.

Berthe Hoola van Nooten's botanical illustrations are celebrated for combining scientific precision with exceptional artistic refinement. Produced using the sophisticated chromolithographic process, this plate displays remarkable color depth and subtle tonal gradations that faithfully reproduce the original watercolor paintings.
