Decorative Antique Beetle Prints, European Coleoptera Chromolithographs, 1893

These striking natural history beetle plates originate from the celebrated German entomological work Käferbuch, Naturgeschichte der Käfer Europas by the naturalist C. G. Calwer. The prints were issued in the expanded fifth edition of 1893, edited by Professor Dr. G. Jäger and revised by Dr. G. Stierlin, and published in Stuttgart by Julius Hoffmann. Calwer’s Käferbuch became one of the most widely used illustrated guides to European beetles during the late nineteenth century and was intended, as stated on the title page, “Zum Handgebrauche für Sammler”, for practical use by collectors.

The plates present carefully arranged groups of European beetles (Coleoptera) illustrated with scientific precision and strong decorative appeal. Each specimen is rendered in rich chromolithographic color, a sophisticated printing technique widely used in the late nineteenth century to reproduce natural history subjects with remarkable clarity and depth. The chromolithographic process allowed printers to apply multiple color layers, creating vivid metallic greens, bronzes, reds, and blacks that closely mimic the natural appearance of these insects.

Among the beetles depicted are several well-known European species, including tiger beetles such as the Green Tiger Beetle (Cicindela campestris) and Hybrid Tiger Beetle (Cicindela hybrida); impressive ground beetles such as the Gold Ground Beetle (Carabus auratus), Violet Ground Beetle (Carabus violaceus), and Spanish Ground Beetle (Carabus hispanus); as well as the famous Caterpillar Hunter (Calosoma sycophanta). Aquatic species such as the Great Diving Beetle (Dytiscus marginalis) also appear alongside smaller but equally fascinating insects including burying beetles (Nicrophorus species), carrion beetles (Silpha thoracica), rove beetles, and various ground beetles found throughout forests, meadows, and wetlands across Europe.

The compositions are both scientific and decorative, with each plate carefully arranged to present multiple species in an elegant and balanced layout. This combination of taxonomy and visual harmony makes the prints particularly appealing for display. Arranged individually or in sets, they create striking wall compositions reminiscent of nineteenth-century cabinets of curiosity and Victorian natural history collections.

Natural history insect illustrations from the nineteenth century have become increasingly sought after by collectors, interior designers, and enthusiasts of scientific illustration. Their jewel-like colors, symmetrical arrangements, and historical character make them ideal for libraries, studies, gallery walls, or interiors inspired by classic natural history aesthetics.

Note: Please note that these prints are originals and not reproductions. They are offered unframed.

Condition report:

Very good antique condition with light age toning and occasional minor spotting consistent with late nineteenth-century paper. Margins remain generous and colors remain strong and vibrant. Minor handling marks may be present as expected for plates originally bound in a reference volume.

Framing tips:

These prints display beautifully when framed individually or arranged as a grid or series. Dark walnut, black, or ebonized frames paired with ivory or warm off-white mats complement the antique paper tones and highlight the vivid colors of the beetles. Sets of four or eight create particularly balanced decorative wall arrangements.
