Common Fox in Winter Landscape, Antique Animal Chromolithograph, 1894

DESCRIPTION

This refined chromolithograph depicts the common fox moving through a winter landscape, rendered with exceptional naturalistic detail and atmospheric restraint. The scene captures two foxes against snow-covered ground, combining observational accuracy with painterly composition, a hallmark of late-19th-century natural history illustration.

The print originates from The Royal Natural History, edited by Richard Lydekker and published in London in 1894. This monumental work brought together leading wildlife artists of the period, translating original paintings into richly colored chromolithographs intended for both scientific reference and domestic display.

The composition is after Wilhelm Kuhnert, one of the most respected animal painters of his generation, known for his ability to combine anatomical precision with lifelike movement and setting. The subdued winter palette makes this an especially strong choice for interiors seeking calm, natural tones.

Condition report:

Good antique condition. Light overall toning and mild age-related patina to margins, consistent with late 19th-century chromolithographs. Image area clean and well preserved.

Framing tips:

Pairs beautifully with a dark walnut or ebonized frame and a wide ivory or warm off-white mat. Also effective floated in a contemporary natural oak frame for a softer, modern look.
