Coastal Wildlife Print, 19th Century Sea Lion Ocean Scene, Soft Pastels
This atmospheric chromolithograph depicts Hooker’s sea lions resting and diving along a rocky shoreline, rendered with remarkable softness and natural movement. The composition combines zoological accuracy with a tranquil coastal mood, characteristic of the finest plates produced for The Royal Natural History, edited by Richard Lydekker and published in London in 1894.
The artwork, after P. J. Smit, reflects late Victorian fascination with marine life and exploration. Subtle pastel skies and gently breaking waves create a calm palette ideally suited to contemporary interiors, particularly coastal or minimalist settings.
