Antique Handcolored Engraving of Starfish and Marine Creatures, c.1800
This original handcolored copperplate engraving features various starfish and other echinoderms, emphasizing their intricate forms and unique anatomical details. The print originates from Friedrich Johann Bertuch's *Bilderbuch für Kinder* (Picture Book for Children), a 12-volume masterpiece published between 1790 and 1830. Renowned for its scientific precision and artistic elegance, Bertuch's work introduced the wonders of natural history to children and collectors alike.
The illustration includes four starfish of varying shapes and sizes, each rendered with remarkable accuracy and detail. The vibrant hand coloring enhances their textured patterns, capturing the beauty of these marine creatures. This engraving is an excellent example of 19th-century scientific art and would be a valuable addition to collections of marine zoology, antique natural history prints, or educational engravings.
