A sharp-shinned hawk, a redstart and a yellow-rumped warbler, an original engraving with hand coloring from Alexander Wilson's American Ornithology, circa 1820. The sheet is lettered at the foot "1. Sharp-shinnd Hawk, 2. Redstart, 3. Yellow-rump" and signed at the lower left "Drawn from Nature by A. Wilson".

The hawk takes up most of the left side of the sheet, standing upright on the top of a fence post with one talon raised, its barred tail hanging down and its eye turned to the viewer. The two small birds perch at the upper right: a redstart with its orange wing and tail patches, and a yellow-rumped warbler on a bare twig. A small lizard crawls across the grass at the bottom. The coloring is light and delicate, in olive, buff, orange and gray.

Wilson's American Ornithology, published from 1808 to 1814, was the first major illustrated book on the birds of the United States.
