Northern gannet, the Dutch Jan-van-Gent, titled "Pelecanus Bassanus", a hand-colored engraving from Nederlandsche Vogelen, the Amsterdam work on Dutch birds issued by C. Nozeman, M. Houttuyn and J.C. Sepp between 1770 and 1829. The sheet is dated 1829 in the catalog.
A single adult gannet stands in profile on a small mound of grass at the water's edge, with its bill open and its head turned slightly to the side. The head and neck are washed in pale buff, the body is white, and the black wingtips cross over the tail. Tufts of marsh grass rise around the bird, and the Latin name is lettered across the upper right. The plate is delicately colored by hand.
The northern gannet (Morus bassanus) is the largest of the gannets and breeds on both sides of the Atlantic, in Western Europe and in North America.
