Adult and young Temminck's auks, a color lithograph lettered "Brachyramphus Temminckii, Adult and Young", from Daniel Giraud Elliot's "The New and Heretofore Unfigured Species of the Birds of North America", published between 1866 and 1869. The sheet is lettered as drawn from nature by Elliot and printed by Bowen & Co. of Philadelphia.
The adult stands on the right on a brown rocky shelf, with a dark crested head, a white breast and barred gray wings. The young bird, smaller and with a plainer head, stands behind it to the left. The coast falls away to a calm sea under a band of orange and blue light, and a colony of small birds sits on the rocks at the far right.
The work appeared between 1866 and 1869 and set out to figure North American species not previously illustrated. Only 200 copies were printed, and the lithography was by Bowen & Co. of Philadelphia.
