Title: Alpine Botanical Lithograph Pair of Arctic Bramble and Spring Gentian
Description: This exquisite pair of botanical lithographs, published in 1874 by George Bell and Sons in London as part of the second series of Alpine Plants, showcases two captivating alpine flora: the Arctic Bramble (Rubus arcticus) and the Spring Gentian (Gentiana verna). These stunning prints exemplify the Victorian era’s fascination with nature and their love for finely detailed botanical illustrations that balanced scientific accuracy with artistic beauty.
In the first print, the bright red flowers of the Arctic Bramble bloom above its lush green foliage, their fine lines and delicate shading capturing the plant’s cheerful yet resilient character. This northern plant, celebrated for its sweet fruit, grows low to the ground, forming a charming contrast with the vibrant blue of the Spring Gentian below. The Gentian’s brilliant blue star-shaped flowers are meticulously rendered, with each petal and leaf captured in exquisite detail that highlights the elegant form and alpine origins of this much-loved flower.
Published by the esteemed Victorian publisher George Bell and Sons, known for their unwavering commitment to quality and precision, these lithographs embody the best of 19th-century botanical illustration. The Alpine Plants series was celebrated for bringing the wonders of remote mountain landscapes to collectors and naturalists throughout Europe, blending the marvels of the natural world with the period’s refined aesthetic.
Condition summary: These 1874 lithographs are in excellent condition, with only minimal wear at the edges that lends them an authentic, timeless character.
Framing tips: Enhance these beautiful alpine flowers with classic wooden frames and soft cream or pale green mats to draw out the rich reds and striking blues, creating a balanced and sophisticated display that brings the delicate charm of alpine gardens into any interior.
