The cougar and the cheetah, a lithograph from the Dutch natural history work De Zoogdieren, afgebeeld en in hunne levenswijze geschetst, plate 83. The two animals are lettered "De Couguar of puma" at the top and "De Tijgerwolf of Gepard" at the bottom.
Each cat is drawn in profile on a strip of ground. The cougar, shown with a plain tawny coat, a heavy head, and a long tail with a dark tip, walks to the left across a bit of grass. Below it the cheetah, a slimmer cat with a spotted coat, a small head, long legs and a ringed tail, stands alert facing the same way.
The puma (Puma concolor) is native to the Americas, from Canada to Patagonia, and is also called the mountain lion; the cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus) is a cat of Africa and parts of western Asia. The name "tiger wolf" was one of the names under which the cheetah was known to Dutch naturalists of the period.
